Getting Started

Welcome to Smart TOC Pro! Follow these steps to activate your extension and start reading smarter.

Pin the Extension Click the puzzle piece icon in your Chrome toolbar and pin Smart TOC Pro so it's always accessible.

Activate Your License Right-click the extension icon and select Options. Go to the Login tab, enter your purchase email and license key, and click Activate.

Enable Cloud Sync (Pro/AI Pro) Once activated, go to the Settings tab and click Force Cloud Sync Now to initialize your Firebase backup. Your notes and bookmarks will now sync everywhere!

How do I set up AI Summarization?

Smart TOC Pro uses a "Bring Your Own Key" model. This means you don't pay us expensive monthly AI subscription fees. You connect directly to OpenRouter, where you can use massive AI models completely for free.

Step-by-Step Setup

Step 1:
Go to OpenRouter.ai and create a free account.
Step 2:
Navigate to the Keys section in your OpenRouter dashboard and click Create Key.
Step 3:
Copy the generated API key. It will start with sk-or-v1-...
Step 4:
Open the Smart TOC Pro Options Page and locate the AI Configuration section.
Step 5:
Paste your key into the input box. Your key is stored securely on your local device and never sent to our servers.
Step 6:
Select Auto-Select Best Free Model from the dropdown menu, and click Save Settings.

Cross-Page Bookmarks

Right-click any heading on a website and click "Pin to Smart TOC". It will save to your global dashboard so you can jump back to that exact section months later.

Inline Page Notes

Click the 📝 icon next to any heading to save your thoughts or extract a snippet. Free users can save up to 5 notes; Pro users have unlimited synced notes.

Ask My Brain (Semantic AI)

Have a question about something you read last week? Open the Ask My Brain tab in the sidebar and ask the AI. It dynamically searches your synced reading history and saved notes to give you highly contextual answers based on your data.

How to generate an HTML Table of Contents for WordPress

Once Smart TOC Pro generates a beautiful list for your article draft, open the Menu and click Copy HTML Embed. This instantly generates perfectly styled HTML with absolute anchor links.

Advanced Customization

CSS Exclusion Selectors

Is the TOC accidentally grabbing annoying "Related Posts" links from a website's footer? You can fix this instantly.

Go to Options -> Advanced Settings, and add footer, .sidebar, nav, #comments to the CSS Selectors to Ignore box. The extension will completely ignore headings inside those elements.

Change Keyboard Shortcuts

The default shortcut to toggle the widget is Ctrl + Shift + G (or Cmd + Shift + G on Mac).

To change this to whatever you prefer, type chrome://extensions/shortcuts into your Chrome address bar, find Smart TOC Pro, and type your new shortcut.

Glassmorphism UI (Pro Feature)

Give your browser a premium macOS feel by enabling Glassmorphism in the Appearance settings. This applies a frosted-glass blur behind the TOC widget, seamlessly blending it with the page behind it.

Troubleshooting

The TOC is not rendering on a specific page

First, verify that the page actually uses standard HTML heading tags (<h1> to <h6>). Second, check if you accidentally excluded the main content area in your "CSS Exclusion Selectors" settings. Finally, Chrome blocks extensions from running on chrome:// pages and the Chrome Web Store.

AI Summaries are returning an error

Ensure your OpenRouter API key is pasted correctly without any extra spaces. If you selected a "PAID" model but haven't added credits to OpenRouter, the API will reject the request. Switch back to "Auto-Select Best Free Model" in the extension options.

"Limit Reached" error for Notes or Summaries

Free tier users are limited to 3 AI summaries per day and a maximum of 5 saved notes. To unlock unlimited summaries, unlimited synced notes, and the "Ask My Brain" feature, upgrade to a Pro or AI Pro license.
